ADDITIONAL ISSUES

Granting Independent Study and Reading Courses Instructors should be careful about granting independent study or reading courses. Core courses (designated with 500 series course numbers) cannot be granted as independent study without the approval of the Discipline Chair. Core classes can never be given as reading courses.

Instructors who grant independent study or reading courses to a student must provide assignments that ensure students master related academic material and adequately supervise student progress. Therefore, instructors should not grant this option if they cannot effectively use this option to train students.

MA/MDiv Written Project Option, ThM Theses, and Doctoral Projects/Dissertations Faculty members willing to supervise and grade theses and major projects must first consult their Discipline Chair for approval. See the information on “Written Project Option” in the Student Handbook.

Mailbox Security All instructors are given a mailbox and lock for securing entry to it. While it can be used to receive posted mail, it is primarily for school leaders and students to use in communicating with faculty members in writing. Because confidential material will be placed in them, faculty members must keep their mailboxes securely locked at all times.

Often LP will place in each instructor’s mailbox a list of students needing monitoring for previous academic violations. If mailboxes are unsecured, it is possible that a student may retrieve a submitted paper after placing it in the mailbox and inadvertently grab and view the monitoring list. This potential problem is only avoided through maintaining a locked mailbox at all times. If you need a new lock or help in remembering the combination, ask the Receptionist for assistance.

Submission of Course Content On the same day grades are due, an electronic copy of course content must be sent to the LP Administrative Assistant for filing. This must include the syllabus with any revisions that occurred during the term, handouts, and either print student or instructor notes for all class sessions; it may also include various tests that were given. If electronic copies of handouts are not available, submit a clear paper copy for scanning. These will be on file for copying should the submitting instructor’s original files be destroyed, for review by other faculty members and accreditation agency teams, and for the aid of others who are developing future courses at IGSL.
