Soul Care
While our ISG environment and the school's variety of special events are designed to help in the students' spiritual formation, there are times when a student will need professional help in the form of individual counseling or coaching. The ISG leader may need to help the student initiate the process, as not many of our students are familiar with these types of soul care.
If you see students who are struggling and need intensive attention, first talk to the student and suggest the possibility of counseling. Some students will welcome your suggestions gladly and may even be relieved that there is help available. Others may come from a background where counseling is seen as a lack of faith or trust in God. Be patient, pray, and look for opportunities to help them see the value of biblical counseling.
For some students, you may simply give the contact information for IGSL’s counselors. Other students will be hesitant or afraid to take the first step. With the student’s permission, you can give their phone number to the counselor and the counselor will be the one to reach out. Another option is to start a chat on Messenger or WhatsApp with the student, the counselor and you. (Again, this is with the permission of the student.) Just introduce them to each other, and as soon as they have both responded, tell them you will leave the chat group.
IGSL Counseling Services are open to IGSL students and spouses. IGSL Counselors schedule appointments on a first come-first-serve basis, although they can usually make exceptions for emergencies or critical situations. Coaching is also available to provide students with settings that are safe and non-judgmental in order to hear God's prompting for growth and to move forward effectively (in ways that work well for them).
